Regional Training Opportunities

Explore hands-on learning experiences across South London and affiliated tertiary centres. These optional training days and shadowing opportunities offer valuable exposure to subspecialties including transplant medicine, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, and MDT-led clinics. Trainees are encouraged to arrange visits during suitable rotations or special interest time, with local contacts available via the trainee reps.

Transplant Week

A valuable opportunity to gain exposure to lung transplant medicine and multidisciplinary care. Trainees should contact the transplant coordinator at Harefield or Royal Brompton in advance to arrange a placement.

Suitable centres include Harefield and Royal Brompton.

This experience is ideally undertaken during an ILD rotation or during allocated special interest time.

Pulmonary Hypertension

Trainees may rotate into a Pulmonary Hypertension service at St George's Hospital, but can consider organising shadowing at Royal Brompton Hospital or GSTT to gain insight into the assessment and management of complex PH cases.

To arrange attendance, contact your local respiratory trainee representatives for key contacts.

Smoking Cessation

Smoking cessation clinics are available at most training sites and provide valuable exposure to behavioural and pharmacological strategies for tobacco dependence. Trainees can arrange to observe by contacting the local respiratory clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or public health smoking cessation lead. These clinics offer an opportunity to observe motivational interviewing techniques and the use of smoking cessation pharmacotherapy in practice.

Lung Function

This training opportunity allows trainees to shadow respiratory physiologists during routine and advanced lung function testing. Sessions are available at all major sites and can be arranged by contacting the lead physiologist or lung function laboratory manager. Trainees will gain experience in the technical aspects and clinical interpretation of spirometry, DLCO, FeNO, and bronchial challenge testing.
